City-as-School is pleased to host the 25th Annual INEPS Congress, which will bring together educators from across the globe to explore the possibilities for authentic learning grounded in real-world experiences.  INEPS is an international network of educators who come together through conferences and exchanges to share ideas and resources, develop new approaches, and reflect upon and evaluate programs within our home schools.  The changing Congress location allows participants to become deeply familiar with the work of one member organization.

Founded in 1972, as a part of the NYC Department of Eduction, City-as-School (CAS) stands as a leading model in experiential learning. Guided by the core values of freedom, trust, and responsibility, CAS reengages over six hundred 17-21 year olds most at-risk of dropping out. Each student, with the aid of an advisor and resource coordinator, self-selects a schedule that combines a 15-20 hour per week internship with innovative in-house classes.

In this way, CAS reconnects youth and revitalizes their interest in their own lives, their education, their relationships, and our greater society.  CAS students learn-by-doing and graduate with more than the minimum requirements to graduate from high school. After presenting portfolios that demonstrate mastery of a full range of skills and knowledge needed to be successful as adults, students have shown greater success in post-secondary paths. INEPS is an international network that promotes “productive learning” – through activity and experience.  Since 1990, this network has brought together educators from schools and programs across the globe in order to develop new approaches to experiential learning and refine existing ones by sharing experiences, practices, perspectives and resources.
